There is no new discussion thread for today, mostly to allow me time to work on the Weekly piece.
Lots of things left to do with the existing discussion threads, and I'll be around to comment on them too. If that isn't enough, there is still the Weekend Open for you all to make your own fun.
Notice to All:
I will be tracking comment activity this coming week, but not site view-counts, in an effort to judge the value of this forum for discussion. *If* activity doesn't warrant the number of thread topics each week, expect there to be a revision in my practice of posting as many topics in the future.
What would help me best would be for each visitor to post at least one comment on any thread during the week, even if it is just a placekeeper to let me count you.
Thanks!

Here is my one!
Here is an article- LA Times-- the next President will disappoint you-
(opinion)

count on my participation as soon as I get through this avalanche of work. I usually write something. :)
Let's hear it for Japan-
breitbart.com — Japan is planning to label consumer goods to show their carbon footprints in a bid to raise public awareness about global warming, an official said Tuesday. Under the plan, a select range of products from beverages to detergent will carry markings...
Darn--
I missed the fireworks in China-- the closing of the Olympics-- boy, these 16 days went by quickly!
It is nice the host won the most medals- With 1.3 billion people there, I imagine there were a few great athletes!
Iran is designing a new nuclear power plant- one minute ago-- Reuters-

Doing a Reuters search here--
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. forces said on Sunday they had caught two prominent al Qaeda leaders, including one they blamed for the kidnapping of an American journalist.
They said they had captured Ali Rash Nasir Jiyad al-Shammari, known as Abu Tiba, on August 17 and Salim Abdallah Ashur al-Shujayri, known as Abu Uthman, on August 11.
Abu Tiba was the Sunni militant group's senior advisor in the Iraqi capital, while Abu Uthman was its "emir", or leader, for the capital's eastern Rusafa district.
Abu Tiba was in charge of al Qaeda during its most active period in early 2007, they said in a statement.

According to this, they were captured a couple weeks ago-- and it was announced today- confirmation as to who they were?
@LDG --
Too bad your boys lost to Mexico yesterday in the LLWS International Playoffs. The title game is being played as I write this between Hawaii and Mexico. While I'd like the US to win, the Mexican team looks damn near unstoppable.
The Japanese kids, did, however, win the consolation game against the Louisiana team.
Oops, looks like my assessment of Mexico was off. Hawaii beat 'em 12-3.
I think less Topics would probably help with conversation as well, since we have more comments per thread. Plus when you have 2 posts in one day, normally only one of them ever seem to get many comments.
I didn't miss those fireworks-- the closing of the Olympics in on right now-- pretty impressive, this is for sure!
Isn't the internet amazing? I had seen a part of the closing throught the photos on the internet earlier! LOL
Max-- are you guys going to have a go at it in 2012?
Max again--
this will be the third time you guys have hosted the Olympics!
London is going to be a busy place!
@mr. bill
re: LLWS
Thanks, at least we crawled into the consolation round. Better than our grownups did at Beijing. and I concur, Hawaii Regional was just scary good this year.
@Max
Good point, but the concern is that I see *any* comments from certain folks I think are visiting.
Otherwise, I may as well lock comments on every thread but the "open threads". Oh, that reminds me...
note to self:
...maybe shouldn't leave comments allowable on Site Admin threads.
Susan: I don't know if i'll be here since i'll be going into my 4th year of college.
LDG: well it's nice to have a topic to discuss. And if we want to digress we don't need a specially sanctioned thread, as you well know ;)
I agree with Max. Suggestion: perhaps one current events thread per week (unless something earth shattering happens) and one open thread, otherwise it's a lot of work for you and for us, trying to comment about everything, particularly when we don't always have time. Perhaps once a month we could have a "special" topic thread... of your choice.
Max--
Fourth year of college? Already? I did not know you had started College? My how time flies!
Were you part of the welcoming for Phelps in London? I saw the airplanes go over Buckingham Palace! very nice!
This was shown after the ceremonies concluded. I will give it to the Chinese, they know how to put on a show!
@LDG-I agree with Max and Marie- especially since your threads are such a challenge- LOL-- You are so brilliant, it is hard to try to even keep up with you!
While you're at it, check out this story.
WOW
Marie--
I headed over to BBC News and I ended up reading about the latest in Pakistan and Kashmir- One article led to another- Kashmir is having big issues going on! Thanks to LDG's thread, I decided to read up about Pakistan-
How did you manage to post a link which shows up?
Well, I will be-- I just learned about inflatable arsenal!
I would think when these first came about, no one knew about them so it would be easy to for one to think these were for real-- but now? Wouldn't there be a way to see with some high powered gizmo to see if these are for real?
where the heck is LDG today?
@Marie
Which story on DANGER ROOM? the inflatables?
@All
What will *probably* become usual course here is:
The Weekly N&C.
one additional discussion thread with a topic a week.
various short forms, as news comes in. say about 4 a week(?)
one open thread a week.
one site admin posting, closed to comments.
LDG-
translate, por favor!
...maybe shouldn't leave comments allowable on Site Admin threads
oops-- LDG and I were typing at the same time-
@Susan
Decoy and counter-decoy technology is a big deal, and most of it is classified, but yes you have the right idea when you think about how to "see" a decoy is a decoy.
It isn't just fooling photography any more.
@Susan
re: "where the heck is LDG today?"
((self-evident reply))
so did you see The Weekly N&C is up for this week?
@Susan
re: "translate, por favor!"
--the Sunday Push is purely an administrative posting, where I put up information on running this 'blog. It is categorized as "site admin" in the sorting.
The Weekend and Midweek Open threads are categorized as "open" and are intended to be playgrounds.
Here on my end, I don't see the weekly N&C-
-- HMMM?
@Susan
re: "I don't see..."
refresh your browser on the main page of this blog, please.
LDG
I'M HERE - I'M HERE so make sure you count me!!
You know Iam a "lurker", but I am here multiple times every day during the week.
Always have to play catch-up on Mondays, as "puter" goes bye bye every Saturday and Sunday.
@KC
wouldn't overlook you, have no fear.
and as to playing "play catch-up on Mondays", well fortunately posting slows over the weekend for several reasons, so fortunately accomodating you can be added to the list.
((grin))
Susan: I haven't started, i was saying in 2012 i would be starting my last year of college.
I should start next fall.
Im usually lurking (aka reading) so you can count my seat!
Read daily, comment when I feel I can add soemthing. it's fun here.
