In charge of "sensitive files", eh?

Here's a compare-and-contrast about an item on the wires right now:

Reuters runs this story as this:

http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSL38377420080803

but Ya Libnan runs it with *a little more* insight:

http://yalibnan.com/site/archives/2008/08/assads_liaison.php

Key Points:

The officer in question was Syria's ranking military liaison with Lebanese Hezbollah. Reuters chose to leave out that little detail.

If you are willing to accept the opinion of DEBKAfile, they claim the fellow was hip-deep in the various Axis of Evil activities that the Syrians are party to.

DEBKA article on this

caveat: It's DEBKAfile.

Score another one for Mossad?

Looking at the DEBKA article. I would discount "threat to the Regime". Apparently the guy was smart and useful for Assad Jr. Rivals for power? well, this is the middle east, but..

Why was he in a Coastal Hotel in the First Place? But I think most of DEBKA's assertiosn of the late generals' activities can be checked.

Scott

P.S. do you read "Spengler" fromt he Times of Asia?? He's very good at big piture issues.

@karl

re: "score..." -- nobody is saying who except those that want to implicate someone else.

Very few public checks on some of those items. High confidence on my part, though. It's just the DEBKA boys occasionally let their cause get in the way of their thinking, so second source everything there.

re: "p.s...." I am aware of "Spengler" but do not make it a regular read. Thank you, though.

follow-up for karl

"Why was he in a Coastal Hotel in the First Place?"

no reputable public source offers to explain that (yet). sorry.

Here's one of several open source confirmations out now that the snipe was performed from a vessel off-shore.

Has some other minor details, and a report of arrests.
