Sold out again

North Korea gets off the U.S. State Sponsors of Terrorism List.

The U.S. supposedly gets a verification regime on North Korean nuclear activities.

To be absolutely plain about this:

We asked nicely.

...and the Bush administration chose other priorities.

...and the memory of Yokota Megumi-san gets sold out, the day after we stood by her memory and that of all the other victims of North Korean terror, lies and duplicity.

Thanks for nothing, Yanks. Hope you like fueling your Indian Ocean squadron by yourselves.

First of all-- catching up with time here, I was not aware of these abductions... So is Megaumi dead?

I see Taro Aso is Prime Minister now? hai

I clearly understand Japan's position-- the abductions should be investigated and not become forgotten. But now, North Korea wants to put this on the back burner because they are wanting to see what Aso is going to do with with his new appt?

Bush just made me angry- he has messes all over the map. He needs to keep his friends. Ridiculous!

grinning to your comment about yanks doing their own fueling in the Indian Ocean.

re: not aware of...

Susan is behind on her reading, for sure

re: President Bush

In this, and in several questions about the Middle East as well, there is some serious doubt that the President is taking an active hand in the matters at all. Some commentators assert that SecState Rice is being left to run things as best she can... Which would be bad if it is true.

re: re-fueling

There is a very real chance the conservative wing of the LDP is about to bail on the "Anti-Terrorism Cooperation" law being renegotiated because of this sell out. If that happens, the bill fails and the oiler comes home.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could just all get along. Another life time.... maybe...

@Patty

Hi and welcome back, friend!

Would that we could all get along...

In this world, the best we can likely hope for is to get by, and often that means *not* getting along with some people. Especially if getting along means appeasing tyrants.

SUSAN IS WAY BEHIND!!!

Hi Patty!

North Korea keeping these abductees in camps or prisons?

Purr said...

Well-- I just heard on the news about the removal of North Korea off the blacklist-- North Korea agreeing to allow nuke inspections including undecided sites-

McCain calls this, as for this decision by the US-- "agreement for its own sake." (I wonder if Bush is doing this because he is trying to "salvage this accord" as he is leaving office?)

And-- The US says it supports Japan's position and will press the North to honor the commitments it made to Tokyo this summer about abductees...

time will tell!!!

and of course, LDG, my ears perked when I heard this because you had already posted in reference to this issue-

I took this comment off one of the articles in reference to this-

"idiots. north korea is our enemy and should be watched more. who is running this country? mickey mouse could do better? "

good point in reference to Mickey Mouse--

re: "...keeping these abductees in camps or prisons?"

Isolated in dispersed secret communities, as far as is known. The best reports come from Hitomi Soga (<-name in English), who has given a detailed story of her abduction, life in North Korea, and marriage to an American Defector.

I just found a small paragraph about Yokota's abduction-- it happened in 1977---her poor parents!

@Susan

You might well want to try and see this:

The movie released on the story of Megumi-san's abduction

It focuses on her family's effort to bring attention to the crime.

I bet Best Buy has it-- I am going to buy it and watch it with Danielle-
she was only 13!

The Washington Post rolls out a story on this, covering the Japanese reaction. Bravo WaPo!

G.W. Bush called T.Aso 30 minutes before the announcement

I wonder how Bush would feel if one of his daughters had been abducted?

I don't see your weekly thread yet-- will come back later- taking Ken to the gym-

The esteemed John R. Bolton on this matter in the WSJ Opinion section.

"It is hard to see how Barack Obama could do worse."

ouch. At least I would have said "anyone".

p.s. @Susan

Supposedly he was quite touched by the story. Makes it even more shameful in a way.

(and The Weekly N&C is up)

LDG--

Obama did say in response to this issue-- " a modest step was taken," as to McCain, who strongly did not like this idea until denuclearization was completely assured--

So maybe Bolten picked up on Obama's comment....

I thought to myself-- here shows the difference in the characters of these two guys-

I am surprised the media has not jumped all over Obama's statement- I would-- time to call Hannity and give him something else to talk about! (grin)

and great article!! Yes and yes to what he said!!!
