The actual story is from two years ago, but it was recently popularized again by this version of the picture.
With all that is terrible in the world, sometimes it is best to remember the good.

Well, I can only tell a little happy --
The trooper (Pte. Jay Fenner) in the story is a Canadian soldier, and he did return home (he is not on the official casualty list).
As to Squeak, I can only hope that either an exception was made to allow the trooper to bring the cat with him, or that the Canadian Forces base in Afghanistan has one heck of a good 2 year-old mouser on the standing garrison.
hm... this might call for a letter to the Ottawa Citizen (newspaper) to see if they could follow up the story.
